We’re going to take a little train ride.

orrsmill2 fall.gif   Pat and Libby are coming tomorrow!  Hurrah!  We’re going to ride the train over the trestle and play in the city, go to the Philharmonic, etc.  I’m hoping it won’t snow.  Happy travels, Patrick and Libby.  Ginny and Craig and kids will follow on Friday.  Drive safely!

Aleksander-Chernucho1.jpg   Happy Easter.  I could have taken a nice sunrise photo for Easter, since Mia knocked a large glass off the counter at 4:44 this morning and made sure we were awake.  This aurora photo will do in lieu of the sunrise deal.

It’s been a big week.  Dad having the heart attack, Gavin joining the world.  What is it about Sunday afternoons that makes us comatose?  I know that the Sabbath is the day of rest, but this is ridiculous.  Even Mia slept.

Hope you all had a happy Easter.

Sackler Lab Fun

Filed under: Uncategorized — annie @ 2:38 pm

sackler lab1.jpg   I spent some time in the Sackler lab yesterday in the Hall of Human Origins at the AMNH.  The lab takes reservations from schools in the NYC boros.  Small classes are able to extract DNA, with advanced students doing more complicated work. This is (obviously) a shaky cell phone photo–mostly for Audrey.  The guy who looks suspiciously like Bill Nye the Science Guy is really a PhD who works for the education department at the AMNH and also teaches genetics at Columbia.  He is great–really pulls the kids in.  They love the lab!  They were extracting strawberry DNA in the lab yesterday, and it smelled great!  The binder was Suave shampoo :)  This is why I like working at the museum.  I get to learn cool geek stuff, too.

A link to the live streaming Old Faithful video has been added to this site.  The predicted time of eruption is listed on the traditional cam site during most of the year.  This video cam is great–they move it around to watch animals and zoom in to eruptions of Beehive and Old Faithful as well as smaller geysers in the vicinity.  Happy watching!  (Old Faithful erupts about ever 90 minutes, so good luck catching it!  If you do, it’s a lucky day for sure.)

The Fiddlist, again. (see Feb. 23rd post)

fiddlist.jpg  He was there again, at 81st street.  He traded his shopka for a driving cap.  (The weather has warmed.)  It was good to hear his tunes again, especially after walking past an ugly city scene on the uptown platform–teens beating another teen (cops had been called, but had not yet arrived).  You get what you get in the city.
